Mechanism of Action:
Spironolactone is a medication which is normally used to treat high blood pressure. However, it also blocks the effects of androgens, which are high in PCOS.
Indication:
In women with PCOS, spironolactone is most often prescribed to manage excess hair growth.
Side Effects:
- black, tarry stool
- numbness or tingling of the hands
- rapid heartbeat
- difficulty urinating or breathing
- abnormal bleeding
- confusion, dizziness, or fatigue
- dry mouth
- breast tenderness
- headache
Drug Interactions:
Notify your physician of any other medications you are taking, especially digoxin, lithium, steroids or other medications for blood pressure.
Spironolactone and Pregnancy:
Because of the anti-androgenic effect and the potential harm to a fetus (feminizing a male fetus), it is very important to use birth control while on this medication.
