Fiber rich foods are every dieter's dream. They fill you up, and prevent you from eating so much at each meal. Foods rich in fiber are healthy, low in calories, fat and sugar and rich in vitamins and minerals. Fiber is indigestible plant material which passes through the digestive system. As it moves through the intestines, it absorbs water and makes elimination, or defecation, easier.
It is recommended that you consume 25 grams of fiber each day. While it is possible to take fiber supplements, getting fiber from your diet is preferred. Fruits, vegetable and whole grains are rich in fiber. Eating a salad before lunch and dinner is a great way to increase the amount of fiber you eat. Make sure that you are using dark greens, and not iceberg lettuce as your base, and add in lots of other veggies. Fruit is a delicious alternative for dessert; make sure to keep the peels on (where appropriate) to get the maximum amount of fiber. Making the switch from white bread to 100% whole grain products is also an easy change to make and can also boost your fiber intake.
