Question: My Doctor Says I Need Routine Tests Because I Have PCOS. Why?
Answer:

Many women mistakenly believe that polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) only affects the menstrual cycle and a woman’s fertility. However, PCOS is a complex disorder that can impact many body systems. To prevent those complications, routine medical screening is necessary.

Women with PCOS are prone to having a host of complications. High levels of blood cholesterol in addition to high blood pressure, increased abdominal weight, and high fasting blood sugar can occur and may indicate metabolic syndrome or other heart disease. Quite often, these complications are preventable if found early.

  • Cholesterol – Depending on your age and medical history, your physician may or may not routinely test your cholesterol. However, you can always request the test if you are concerned. The blood test will measure your levels of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides.

  • Blood pressure – Your blood pressure should also be checked at least once a year. If you are on the birth control pill, your physician may choose to check your blood pressure every six months. Home monitoring may also be appropriate if you have a history of high blood pressure.

  • Blood glucose – A fasting blood glucose level should be checked periodically as well. Depending on your weight, and other risk factors for diabetes, your physician will determine when it is appropriate.
