Is PCOS Genetic?

By , About.com GuideAugust 13, 2008

Women frequently want to know what caused their PCOS, and if they can pass it on to their children. Unfortunately, researchers are still unsure of what causes PCOS. It is known that there are variations in many of the hormones associated with PCOS, but it is not know what causes those differences. Currently, many physicians believe that there is a genetic link, however no distinct abnormality has been found.

I have pcos and I want the reserchers to try and find this out as fast as they can. I want to have kids and I want to know if it going to be genetic so then if I have a little girl I want to test her to see if she has it or not.

I had PCOS when I was 19 and am now 63. I had all of one ovary and part of the other removed back then. The Doctor only left the part in because of my age. I was told that it was unlikely that I would have children. However I did have one daughter. I was not able to conceive again after that. I have had weight issues all of my adult life. Extremely difficult to lose any weight . I now have the symptoms of Diabetes and will be tested next week. I also have high blood pressure. All of these things thanks to PCOS.I was not diagnosed early. Two years before my surgery I had a painful episode of a burst cyst and doctors did not check me for PCOS. Didnt know enough then I guess. Please check early for this condition.

The answer to this question is a complicated one. Researchers are beginning to believe that PCOS does have a genetic component because of the clustering that is observed in families. It is known that women with PCOS are more likely to have daughters who also have PCOS. Current studies suggest that genes involved in the androgen production or metabolic pathways may be implicated, but much more research is needed before that can be definitively linked.

I’m 14 and I haven’t had a period for over 4 months. My mum has polycystic and recently I’ve started wondering if I could have it too. I’ve probably made myself paranoid by looking it up on the internet, but I have the 3 main things it said may effect having it: type two diabetis in the family, early balding in men in the family, and a close relative with polycystic.
I was wondering if anyone could suggest other reasons (apart from stess and pregnancy(I’m only 14)) that I could explain why im so late.
I’m making my mum book an appointment for the doc’s, but I thinks she’s putting it off because she doesn’t want to think I may have it.
