Finding support whenever you have a chronic syndrome is a crucial step to accepting and managing it. PCOS is no different. Women who suffer from this syndrome often have issues becoming pregnant, struggle with their weight, and have other symptoms that can impact their self-esteem. Finding other women who can understand your struggles is essential. So, where can you find support for PCOS? Read on to find out!

Internet Forums

Internet chat rooms and forums are a great place for you to connect with other women also suffering from PCOS. Chances are, you can even find a group that addresses your specific concern, like infertility and/or weight loss. And the best part of using these internet chats is that you can pop in and participate any time you feel like you want or need to, from the comfort of your own computer. Even in the middle of the night, you can probably find a compassionate group of women to talk to if needed.

So where do you find such a forum? Of course you can always check out the forums right here at the About PCOS site. But you can also find a large community of women at the PCOSupport Community Forums, or at the SoulCysters forum. Keep in mind however, that while you may get some good advice from the women posting there, this is not a good substitute for sound medical treatment. Before you start taking any medication, including “all natural supplements,” keep in mind that you must speak with your own physician. Some herbal supplements can actually interact with medication that you are already taking.

Some internet forums can also get mean or inappropriate. If you notice other members acting rudely towards the other women there, it may not be a supportive environment for you and you can consider checking out some other sites.

Support Groups

If you prefer a more personal group, you can always find a local, in-person, group to participate in. Support groups usually meet every one to two weeks at a specific location. Ask your doctor if she knows of any, or you can check out PCOS groups on MeetUp. This organization has put together hundreds of groups around the world, just for women with PCOS. Enter your zip code in the search box and see if there are any local groups.

If you can’t find any support groups near you, consider starting one. Talk to your doctor and inquire if she knows of any other women who might be interested. Perhaps with your doctor’s help, she can connect you to other women that are also looking for a little extra help.

Professional Counseling

Finally, if you are experiencing any symptoms of depression, like feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, are having difficulty sleeping, are gaining or losing weight, or are sleeping too much, you may benefit from professional counseling. Finding a therapist who can help you work through your feelings about the syndrome can be immensely useful in helping you find peace with PCOS. Check out the American Society of Reproductive Medicine website for help in locating a therapist who has been specially trained in treating women with reproductive diseases.
