Being diagnosed with PCOS can be overwhelming; however, by taking these five steps today, you can help minimize your risk of complications and learn how to properly manage PCOS.

Quit Smoking

One of the main complications of PCOS is heart disease, and smoking only exacerbates that risk. Quitting smoking can drastically reduce your risk of developing heart disease later in life. Also, birth control pills are one of the primary medications that your doctor may use to help you manage PCOS. Smoking while taking the pill can be dangerous, as it increases the risk of developing a blood clot.

Make Some Healthy Changes to Your Diet

Besides helping you lose weight, a low glycemic diet can help minimize insulin resistance, which is linked to PCOS.

Get Enough Zzzs

Many people are getting fewer then the recommended number of hours of sleep each night. Getting enough sleep can actually help you lose weight and make you feel better. Most people need six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

Do Your Homework

Learn about your risk for developing complications, what can be done to reduce your risk and your treatment options. Knowing how to properly manage this condition can empower you and help you take charge of your health.
