Exercising in the Summer Heat

Wednesday July 2, 2008

Well, the time is upon us again. The long, hot days and warm nights. The days spent outside, just taking in the fresh air. While the warm weather is often welcome, it also gives us an excuse to stop exercising "because of the heat". Luckily, we don't have to stop exercising altogether, but there are many other activities that we can consider to get our daily fix of exercise. Swimming or water sports are a very refreshing way to beat the summer heat, and a great full body workout in many instances. Gardening is also a great way to keep your yard looking beautiful, eating the healthy fruits and vegetables of your labor and increasing your activity level. Take your dog for a run in the evening (when it's most cool out) or move your yoga workout outdoors. Either way, it's a great time to get out of the gym, try something new and give your exercise routine a jolt!

Depression linked to Diabetes

Wednesday June 18, 2008

Researchers have long known of an association between diabetes and depression. A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association performed by researchers at Johns Hopkins has shown that this link goes both ways. It was found that not only are people with diabetes more likely to suffer from depression, but people with depression are also more likely to develop depression.

So what does this mean for treatment? It is important for physicians to screen their patients for both conditions, especially when the risk for either disease is elevated. By quickly implementing a treatment plan, the hope is to minimize any future risk of complications or developing additional health issues.
