In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, which is the first week in August each year, countries around the world are celebrating in many different ways. Breastfeeding is key in protecting children during many different health crises. In fact, breastfeeding is the single most effective step a mother can take in conferring immunity and protection to her baby.
Women with PCOS often wonder if breastfeeding with PCOS may be more difficult because of the hormonal changes associated with the syndrome. The short answer is most likely not. There has been some anecdotal evidence that a woman's milk supply may be affected by the hormonal irregularities of PCOS, however it is uncertain if this is truly a result of PCOS, or some other unknown factor. More studies are needed before a true relationship can be determined.
