You may have seen concerning news recently about the diabetes drug, Avandia, which is also sometimes prescribed as an off-label medication for PCOS-related insulin resistance. Avandia helps the body to increase its response to insulin. Decreased insulin sensitivity is a common problem in overweight women with PCOS.

The FDA is conducting a review of a large, long-term study examining the risk of heart-related complications arising from taking Avandia. They are also looking to see if the benefits of taking Avandia outweigh the potential risks. No conclusions have been reached yet, as the review is ongoing.

This does not mean that you should stop taking Avandia if it is being prescribed for you. It is not a bad idea, however, to discuss your risk factors and concerns with your doctor.
