I’ve got some bad news. It seems that the diet sodas that seem like a great, calorie free alternative to regular soda, aren’t such a great choice. A recent study which appeared in Circulation has found that drinking one or more sodas each day, diet or regular, increases the chance of developing risk factors for Metabolic Syndrome. This disease, which is a cluster of obesity, diabetes, and cardiac disease, is also common in women with PCOS. While researchers are not sure what the association is between the calorie-free diet soda and the increased risk, it appears that artificial sweetners, and high fructose corn syrup, both of which are common ingredients, may play a role.
As an alternative, try flavored, unsweetened seltzer water. If you don’t like the taste, add a splash of one hundred percent all natural juice. Grape and orange juices are especially good. You’ll not only save calories, and avoid putting chemicals in your body, but it’s a great way to increase the amount of water you drink in a day!
